Losing Medicaid Funding Would Devastate Addiction Recovery in Mid-Michigan

As the CEO of Ten16 Recovery Network, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that Medicaid funding has on the lives of individuals working to overcome addiction in mid-Michigan. I’ve seen families reunite, individuals regain their health, and communities strengthened. It isn’t easy to overstate how vital this support is—not just for individuals in treatment but for families, employers, and entire communities.
Addiction is a complex health condition, and recovery often requires access to a broad range of treatment and support services. Overcoming a substance use disorder may also require access to mental health interventions and primary care. For many we serve, Medicaid is the lifeline that makes this care affordable and available.

Without Medicaid funding, thousands in our region would face barriers that are simply insurmountable. In fact, 80% of our clients rely on Medicaid or the Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid Expansion) for their treatment! They would lose access to evidence-based treatment and vital supports that help prevent relapse and promote lasting recovery. This would not only jeopardize individual health but would also strain emergency services, increase overdose fatalities, and lead to more untreated addiction-related illnesses.

Our community’s economy and public safety are also at stake. People in recovery are productive workers, caring parents, and engaged neighbors. Supporting them as they rebuild their lives is an investment that pays dividends in reduced healthcare costs, fewer incarcerations, intact families, and a stronger workforce. This is not just about healthcare, it’s about building a more prosperous future for our community.

I urge policymakers and stakeholders to recognize the critical importance of Medicaid funding for substance use disorder services. Cutting or rolling back this support risks undoing years of progress and leaving too many vulnerable individuals without a path forward.
Ten16 Recovery Network believes everyone deserves a chance to rebuild their lives. Maintaining Medicaid funding ensures that chance remains available to all who need it. We hope you share our commitment to this cause.
